Introduction
Choosing a university of study is one of the most important decisions a student makes after secondary school. For many Nigerian students, federal universities are a popular option because they offer a wide range of courses, operate under the federal government, and provide opportunities to study fields such as medicine, engineering, law, education, agriculture, computer science, and social sciences.
However, finding the right university is only the first step. Students also need to know where to check admission requirements, obtain Post UTME forms, confirm application deadlines, and follow official admission updates. Unfortunately, many applicants rely on social media posts or unofficial websites and may miss important information or fall victim to admission scams.
This guide provides a directory of federal universities in Nigeria and links to their official websites where available. It also explains how to find each university’s admission portal, what to check before applying, and how to avoid common mistakes during the admission process.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) maintains an official directory of Nigerian universities. You can consult its Federal Universities directory to confirm institutional information.
Important: A university’s official website is not always the same as its admission portal. Some institutions open their application portals only during specific admission periods. Always check the university’s latest admission notice before paying for an application form.

How to Find the Official Admission Portal of Any Federal University in Nigeria
Finding the correct admission portal is important because application forms, Post UTME registration, screening results, and admission lists are usually published through official university channels.
Follow these steps to locate the right portal:
- Identify your preferred university. Confirm its full name and location to avoid confusing it with another institution.
- Visit the official university website. Use the links in this guide or locate the institution through the NUC directory at https://www.nuc.edu.ng/nigerian-univerisities/federal-univeristies/.
- Look for the admissions section. Common labels include Admissions, Undergraduate Admissions, Post UTME, Applicant Portal, or Online Application.
- Read the current admission announcement. Confirm the academic session, eligibility requirements, application fee, closing date, and screening procedure.
- Follow the link provided by the university. Avoid entering personal information on an unfamiliar website that claims to be an admission portal.
- Keep your application details safe. Save your application number, payment receipt, login details, and confirmation page.
Some universities use separate subdomains or third-party application platforms. A separate web address is not automatically fraudulent, but you should access it through a link published by the university itself.
How to Apply for Admission into a Federal University in Nigeria
Although application procedures differ, most undergraduate applicants follow a similar process.
Step 1: Obtain the Required O’Level Results
Applicants generally need the required WAEC, NECO, or other accepted O’Level results for their chosen course. The required subjects and number of credits vary by programme and institution.
Before applying, check the university’s current requirements for your preferred course. Competitive programmes may have specific subject combinations.
Step 2: Register for JAMB UTME or Confirm Direct Entry Eligibility
Candidates seeking admission into first-degree programmes usually apply through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Direct Entry applicants must meet the relevant qualification requirements.
Visit the official JAMB website at https://www.jamb.gov.ng for registration information and admission guidance.
Step 3: Check the University’s Post UTME Requirements
Some universities conduct Post UTME examinations, while others use screening procedures based on submitted information or other approved criteria. Follow the procedure announced by your chosen university for the relevant academic session.
Do not rely on an old admission notice. Requirements, deadlines, and screening arrangements can change from one session to another.
Step 4: Complete the Online Application
Open the university’s official admission portal and follow the instructions. You may be asked to provide your JAMB registration number, O’Level details, personal information, and other documents.
Review your information carefully before submitting the application.
Step 5: Pay the Application Fee Through an Approved Channel
Where an application fee applies, pay only through the payment method specified by the university. Keep your transaction reference and receipt.
Do not transfer money to an individual’s personal account based on a social media message or an unofficial admission agent’s promise.
Step 6: Monitor Your Admission Status
Check the university’s portal regularly for screening updates, admission lists, and further instructions. You should also monitor your JAMB CAPS account where applicable.
The official JAMB CAPS page is available at https://jamb.gov.ng/caps.
How to Check Your Admission Status on JAMB CAPS
JAMB CAPS is the Central Admissions Processing System used for admission-related processes.
To check your admission status:
- Visit the official JAMB website.
- Open the e-Facility portal and sign in using the required details.
- Locate the admission status or CAPS section.
- Follow the instructions displayed on the portal.
- Review your status and follow any instructions provided.
If you have been offered admission, read the displayed information carefully before accepting or rejecting the offer. If your status has not changed, it does not automatically mean that you have been rejected. Admission processing may still be ongoing.
Use only the official JAMB portal and avoid sharing your password or sensitive account information with strangers.
Requirements for Admission into Federal Universities in Nigeria
Admission requirements depend on the university, course, admission route, and academic session. Common requirements include:
- A valid JAMB UTME registration for applicants using the UTME route.
- The required O’Level credits and subject combination.
- Meeting the university’s published UTME score and screening requirements.
- Completion of the university’s Post UTME or screening procedure, where applicable.
- Correct personal information and matching examination details.
- Additional qualifications for Direct Entry applicants, where relevant.
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Some courses attract more applicants than the number of available places, and individual universities may apply additional selection criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions About Federal Universities in Nigeria
How many federal universities are in Nigeria?
The number can change as the government establishes new institutions and the NUC updates its directory. Check the latest NUC federal universities directory for the current official list.
Where can I find the official admission portals of federal universities?
Start with the official university website and select its admissions or Post UTME section. If you cannot locate the relevant link, consult the university’s listing on the NUC website.
Are all federal university admission portals open now?
No. Application portals open and close according to each institution’s admission schedule. Check the latest official announcement for the academic session you intend to apply for.
Can I gain admission into a federal university without writing JAMB?
Most regular undergraduate UTME applicants need JAMB. Other routes, such as Direct Entry or institution-specific approved programmes, have their own requirements. Confirm the applicable route with JAMB and the university.
Is a federal university better than a state university?
Neither category is automatically better for every student. Compare the course accreditation, facilities, fees, location, accommodation, teaching quality, and career opportunities before making your choice.
Can I apply to more than one federal university?
JAMB’s rules and the permitted choice arrangements apply to your application. Review the current JAMB guidelines and each university’s requirements before making or changing your choices.
How can I avoid fake university admission portals?
Use links published on the institution’s official website or confirm the institution through the NUC directory. Be cautious of websites that demand payment to personal bank accounts or guarantee admission in exchange for money.
Where can I check federal university Post UTME forms?
Visit the official website of your preferred university and check its admissions section. Do not assume that a form is available simply because an old announcement or social media post is circulating online.
Conclusion
Federal universities in Nigeria offer a broad range of academic opportunities, from general university education to specialised programmes in technology, agriculture, medicine, transportation, aviation, and education.
Before choosing an institution, compare the courses available, admission requirements, location, fees, and other factors that matter to you. Most importantly, use official university websites and JAMB resources when applying for admission.
Save this guide for reference, but always verify the latest information through the National Universities Commission, JAMB, and your preferred university. Admission dates, portals, and eligibility requirements can change, so checking current official announcements is the safest way to prepare for the 2026/2027 admission session.
